Why Instagram is addictive, does it affect your health?

It is a social networking site where at first people go to resolve their boredom. But soon people lose control and end up spending hours in a feed, explore page or store. Instagram’s addiction is a real thing and is very common is mostly pre-teens, teens, young adults. But however, this doesn’t mean that middle-aged people don’t get addicted.

Why is Instagram so Addictive?

Instagram is the place where people only upload the best pictures and best moments of their life. Filled with ‘aesthetic pictures’, Instagram portrays a life of perfection.  Everything has it’s positive and negative sides.

Instagram also has it’s the positive side. People have been able to socialize without much hesitation. Men and women of similar interests find each other and have conversations.  Some find their old long-lost friends, the explore page of Instagram finds it’s a suitable content consumer.

Initially one can think that/she will take a break from whatever they are doing and scroll Insta for 5 minutes. But once one gets into the habit of scrolling it seems like that the fingers can’t stop anymore.  He/she lacks track of time and before he/she realizes that they have spent too much time, Instagram hardly lets them lose focus from their content, so why does it happen?

Present day generations have less people to interact to some times. With mostly working parents and having a nuclear family, one may find ample of time to spend on social media talking to strangers.

Users of Instagram can sometimes be seems being obsessed with the likes and comments they get in their photos, they crave for more like, more followers and more of online praises. The “fun” posting of pictures becomes very conscious. 

Now think why and when do people post pictures? Usually when they like the picture, or when they think the moment is precious or they have had happiness in that moment or sometimes random selfies which make one happy, right? However, this has altered now. Nowadays people do it for the gram. They post what they think people will like for the most amount of likes and do not post what makes them happy anymore. This leads to prioritizing the thought of others than one’s own self.

Secondly, ever seen that how we only get to see the perfect skin, perfect bodies on Instagram and think that people are flawless? Grammars many times Photoshop their photos and remove all imperfections for becoming more appealing on socials. This leads young minds into being more conscious of their bodies and their looks. This is probably the most toxic trait that can be noticed on Instagram.

Instagram is a platform consisting of various interests. Cooking? Bikes? Makeup? Travel? Modeling? You name it,  Instagram has it all. The app also provides stories, posts, reels, videos, IGTV’s all in one place. Doesn’t it make it more appealing why it is this addictive? Because it provides the same topic of interest in variation, and the variation prevents people from getting bored of it.

HOW DOES INSTAGRAM EFFECT HEALTH?

Moreover, social media is a place where one is unable to distinguish between what is genuine and not. So one should not get easily effected by what one see’s on social media. One may suffer from an inferiority complex and lack of confidence.  One might grow obsessed over an unnatural body standard which is highly widespread on Instagram, especially for women.  This can lead to an eating disorder, body dysmorphia and also can cause depression.

Mental Heal is the most vital. one must love herself/ himself the most and not obsess over some unnatural body and beauty standards.
